Fenerbahce Control The Tie In Graz

Fenerbahce continued their push towards the UEFA Champions League main draw by defeating Sturm Graz 1-0 at the Merkur-Arena, completing a 3-0 aggregate success and moving into the UCL play-off round. The result also extended their unbeaten head-to-head record against the Austrian side, giving them a third H2H win in four meetings.

Sturm Graz had been heavily outplayed in Turkey in last week’s first leg, meaning they needed to win by at least two clear goals to avoid going out inside 90 minutes. That was already a demanding target, particularly as they had not achieved such a result in any of their previous eight European home matches before tonight.

The first notable opening came at the other end. Talisca, looking to score for the fourth time in as many Champions League appearances this season, forced Daniil Khudyakov into a strong save that kept the ball out of the bottom-left corner. On 26 minutes, the Brazilian had another chance from the edge of the penalty area, but his first-time strike was directed straight at Khudyakov.

Sturm Graz Threaten Before Talisca Settles It

Sturm Graz briefly grew into the contest around the half-hour mark. Simon Seidl sent a header over the crossbar and then had a shot blocked, while Jon Gorenc Stankovic later met the ball with a header near the penalty spot that was stopped by Mert Gunok.

That spell offered the hosts encouragement before half-time, but Fenerbahce’s recent European away record kept the pressure firmly on Sturm Graz. The Turkish side had conceded no more than one goal in each of their last five European away fixtures, leaving the Austrians still on the edge of elimination.

The interval came at a useful moment for Fenerbahce, who slowed the game after the restart and made Sturm Graz chase possession. A wayward Talisca effort more or less reflected the rhythm of the opening hour.

Both managers then made triple substitutions in an attempt to alter the tempo, and the decisive moment arrived soon afterwards. Petar Petrovic brought down Talisca inside the box, handing the forward the chance to protect his perfect UCL scoring record for the campaign. He converted low beyond Khudyakov from 12 yards, effectively ending Sturm Graz’ hopes.

Late Chances, Clean Sheet And The Next Obstacle

The closing stages were largely routine for Fenerbahce, although Jacob Hodl nearly gave the game a different tone when his shot from inside the area was blocked wide with 15 minutes remaining. Sturm Graz became increasingly urgent thereafter, but Fenerbahce still created a late chance of their own, with Kerem Akturkoğlu denied at close range by an excellent save.

Fenerbahce held firm to record their first away clean sheet in UCL qualifying since 2022. Their final hurdle before a first UCL main draw appearance in 18 years will be Lyon.

Lukaku Move From Napoli Nears Completion

Alongside their European progress, Fenerbahce are also close to adding Romelu Lukaku from Napoli. The Italian champions have reached an agreement with the Turkish giants for the Belgian striker in a deal worth an initial €6 million, plus performance-related bonuses.

The 33-year-old forward has already completed and passed his medical examination with the Istanbul-based club. He has also agreed personal terms on a contract reportedly worth €10 million per season after discussions over the proposed move to Istanbul.

According to transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, talks between Napoli and Fenerbahce have been concluded, clearing the path for Lukaku to continue his career in the Turkish Super Lig. Fenerbahce will pay Napoli €6 million upfront, with further payments tied to performance-related conditions included in the agreement.

The Belgian international has been medically cleared to complete the transfer, and the two clubs are now exchanging the final documentation needed to formalise the deal. With the main parts of the agreement settled, only administrative procedures remain before the transfer becomes official.

An official announcement is expected in the coming hours, with Lukaku set to link up with his new Fenerbahce team-mates as the club finalises preparations for the new season.
