Barcelona Contemplate Late Swoop for Fenerbahce Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic

Croatian goalkeeper Dominic Livakovic

Key Takeaways:

  • Barcelona are considering a late approach for 31-year-old Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic
  • The club’s proposed plan is to sign Livakovic this summer, loan him out for the 2026/27 campaign, and reintegrate him into the first-team squad the following season
  • Livakovic is under contract with Fenerbahce until summer 2028

Barcelona’s Transfer Strategy and Goalkeeping Search

With the arrivals of Rodri officially confirmed and Joao Cancelo secured, FC Barcelona continue to pursue reinforcements in the transfer window. While a new centre-forward remains the top priority for manager Hansi Flick and director Deco, the club’s technical team are also seeking to bolster the goalkeeping department in preparation for the future.

The Catalan club are weighing up a late transfer move for Croatian international Dominik Livakovic. The 31-year-old has returned to Fenerbahce following a loan spell at Dinamo Zagreb for the second half of last season. However, he does not currently fit into Fenerbahce’s long-term plans, making a transfer feasible as Barcelona explore alternatives between the posts.

Succession Planning in Barca’s Goalkeeping Ranks

Barcelona’s intent is not to integrate Livakovic immediately. Instead, the club are considering signing Livakovic in the current window, then sending him on loan for the duration of the 2026/27 season. The purpose would be to position him as a backup to Joan Garcia starting the following year, ensuring a smooth succession plan once Wojciech Szczesny’s contract, set to expire next year, comes to an end.

Earlier this summer, Barcelona also explored a move for Alex Remiro of Real Sociedad, but that possibility failed to materialise. With Szczesny expected to remain as the secondary option for now, the Catalans see Livakovic as a viable candidate to inherit the role in the near future.

Livakovic’s Recent Career and Contract Situation

Livakovic is under contract with Fenerbahce until summer 2028. Notably, he spent time on loan at Girona during the first half of the 2025/26 season, though he did not make any appearances during his tenure there. Subsequently, he returned to Fenerbahce, while Girona opted to bring in Marc-Andre ter Stegen on loan from Barcelona.

It remains to be seen whether Barcelona will proceed with their interest in Livakovic or pause their pursuit of new goalkeeping options until a future transfer window.
