Diabaté Nears Newcastle Move After Rapid Rise in Turkiye
Ousmane Diabaté is set to join Newcastle United, according to reports from Turkiye, with the young midfielder said to have chosen United despite interest from Feberbahce, Brentford and Tottenham.
The 18-year-old has progressed quickly since joining Turkish top tier side Gençlerbirliği from Guinean club Académie SOAR in December 2025. He has made 10 appearances for the Gençlerbirliği under 19s, followed by seven first team outings.
His development has also been recognised internationally, with Diabaté capped at senior level by Guinea in June. He will turn 19 in September.

Statement Performance Against Fenerbahce
Diabaté’s most recent first team appearance came against an expensively assembled Fenerbahce side featuring Nathan Ake, Mattéo Guendouzi, Marco Asensio and Milan Skriniar.
In the opening league match of the season, Diabaté started and helped Gençlerbirliği secure a shock 2-1 win over Fenerbahce.
There are speculations that, if the transfer is completed, Newcastle United could allow Diabaté to remain on loan at Gençlerbirliği so he can continue receiving regular first team football this season.
Gonzalez Talks Add Another Layer to Midfield Rebuild
Newcastle are also exploring a deal for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez as Matthias Jaissle’s side continue to reshape their midfield.
The need for reinforcement follows the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to Tottenham and Arsenal, respectively. Newcastle have already brought in younger midfield options Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, but they are also looking at more established players.
Gonzalez Maintains He Is Happy at Man City
Gonzalez made 41 appearances for City during the 2025-26 season, although he started only two Premier League games after January.
Even with limited league starts in that period, the Spaniard has said he has no issue with his playing time and would like to remain at the Etihad beyond this summer.
“I’m happy here,” he said. “I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven’t seen anything, but I’m happy here.
“I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard.
“We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position. That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything.”
Midfield Targets and Context
| Player | Age | Current club | Reported Newcastle status | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ousmane Diabaté | 18 | Gençlerbirliği | Has travelled for a medical on Tyneside ahead of signing for Newcastle United | 10 under 19 appearances, seven first team appearances, senior cap for Guimea in June, turns 19 in September |
| Nico Gonzalez | 24 | Man City | Newcastle have reportedly entered exploratory talks with Man City | 41 appearances for City in 2025-26 and only two Premier League starts after January |
Between Diabaté’s reported medical and the exploratory contact over Gonzalez, Newcastle’s midfield recruitment appears to be operating on two fronts: securing emerging talent while also examining more ready-made options for the squad.
