Konsa Arrival Set To Strengthen Arsenal’s Defensive Depth
Arsenal are close to finalising the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, with the defender expected to complete the move on Friday. The Gunners identified Konsa as a player capable of offering dependable cover across the back line, and the transfer became viable after they brought the fee down to an initial £51 million during negotiations with Aston Villa.
The deal forms part of a significant summer for Arsenal, but it is not expected to be the final piece of their recruitment work. With much of the squad already assembled, the club’s attention has been directed towards the attacking department.

Forward Search Continues After Álvarez Pursuit Ends
Arsenal have been determined to add an elite forward to a squad already viewed as being in a strong position heading into the new season. The club are reigning champions, have just beaten Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield, and have brought in Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis.
There is also growing confidence around the club, with their manager now the longest-serving boss in the Premier League and optimism increasing that Arsenal could be entering a particularly successful period. However, the belief remains that one major attacking addition could lift the team to another level.
Julián Álvarez had been among the names Arsenal wanted to explore, with the club keen to see whether a deal could be possible. His future at Atlético Madrid had become increasingly uncertain, making the Argentina international an appealing target for the Gunners, who would have welcomed the chance to bring the former Manchester City striker back to the Premier League.
Atlético Opened Door To Arsenal – But Not Barcelona
According to Sportingpedia sources in Spain, Atlético Madrid eventually changed their stance on Álvarez after previously refusing his request to move to Barcelona. Los Colchoneros had been determined to keep the striker at any cost, but the relationship between the club and the player deteriorated to the point where the management became willing to sell him.
However, Atlético were prepared to negotiate only with Arsenal rather than Barcelona, their direct rival. Álvarez rejected the possibility of returning to the Premier League and remained set on joining Barcelona instead.
The situation became even more complicated after Atlético Madrid blocked Álvarez’s preferred move to Barcelona. He also reportedly received calls from Manchester City urging him not to join Arsenal, whom City consider there biggest rival right now.
Arsenal have now walked away from the deal and ended their pursuit. Julián Álvarez to Arsenal is officially off, with the Gunners now focusing their attention on other targets.
Other Names Remain In The Frame
Arsenal have assessed several possible forward additions during the summer. Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Jr were among the players explored, while Victor Osimhen was also offered to Arsenal last week in a move that emerged unexpectedly. The club ultimately decided not to proceed with that opportunity.
Final Piece Still Missing In Arsenal’s Window
With the Konsa transfer in its closing stages and the majority of the squad already in place, Arsenal’s recruitment focus has returned to the forward line. The club have already made important moves in the market, but the search for a central attacking player capable of providing a genuine elite option remains a leading priority.
Álvarez is no longer part of that plan after rejecting Arsenal’s approach, leaving the Gunners to move on to alternative targets as they look to complete an already ambitious summer window.
