Champions League Exit Creates Major Financial Pressure
Lyon’s failure to reach the UEFA Champions League has left the club facing a significant financial challenge, with player sales now expected to become central to balancing the books. After being eliminated by Fenerbahçe in the final qualifying round, Les Gones are set to miss out on the revenues attached to Europe’s premier continental competition.
Lyon will likely have to raise around €100m through transfers before the start of next summer. That requirement comes at a difficult time, with less than one week of the current transfer window remaining and activity at the Groupama Stadium now expected to accelerate.

Fenerbahçe Defeat Leaves Lyon Counting the Cost
The manner of Lyon’s Champions League exit was especially painful. OL scored two goals in the second half that would have placed them in the draw for this evening’s league phase, but both were disallowed. Fenerbahçe, having established a two goal lead in the first half, ultimately progressed at Lyon’s expense.
The sporting setback has therefore carried an immediate financial consequence. Without Champions League qualification, Lyon are under pressure to raise as much money as possible through outgoing deals before the window closes.
Malick Fofana Exit Now Looks Inevitable
It is now virtually impossible for Lyon to keep Malick Fofana (21) during the summer transfer window. The Belgian international forward had expressed a desire to remain at OL and compete in the UEFA Champions League, but that outcome is no longer available following the club’s elimination.
With Lyon needing to strengthen their financial position, a transfer before the end of the window now looks inevitable. Had Les Gones qualified for the Champions League, the club would have had a stronger negotiating position and Fofana’s value would have been higher.
Planned €50m Sale Could Be Brought Forward
Lyon had planned to keep Fofana at the Groupama Stadium this summer if they reached the Champions League, then look to sell him next summer. The club hoped that, following a successful season with the Belgian attacker, they would be able to secure a fee of €50m for his services.
That plan has now been disrupted by the urgency of Lyon’s financial situation. A much lower fee is now likely because OL need to sell quickly. Liverpool and Bayern Munich have previously shown interest in the forward.
