Newcastle Move For Nmecha Quickly Dismissed
Borussia Dortmund’s summer business could have included another significant twist, but the club chose not to entertain Newcastle United’s pursuit of Felix Nmecha.
According to Sport Bild, Newcastle made concrete enquiries about the Germany international and were prepared to include Nick Woltemade in the opposite direction, along with several millions. Woltemade has since joined Juventus on loan.
Dortmund, however, regarded Nmecha as a central part of their plans for the season under Niko Kovac, and the Premier League club’s approach was swiftly rejected.

Busy Window At Signal Iduna Park
The rejected proposal came during an active summer for Dortmund. The club added Konstantinos Karetsas, Giannis Konstantelias, Joey Veerman and Joane Gadou to their squad, before completing a deadline-day loan move for Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri.
Nwaneri joined on a season-long loan from Arsenal but arrived too late to feature in Dortmund’s German Cup opener against HEBC Hamburg.
Borussia Dortmund Cruise Through German Cup Opener
On the pitch, Borussia Dortmund followed their 2-0 Bundesliga win over Hamburg with a dominant 5-0 victory against fifth-division HEBC Hamburg in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday night.
Niko Kovac made seven changes for the tie, while Dortmund’s deadline-day newcomer Nwaneri was unavailable because his loan move from Arsenal was completed too late for him to be involved.
HEBC were officially the hosts, but they moved the fixture from their 2,500-seat home ground to the 57,000-capacity Volkspark Stadion, which is the home of Bundesliga side Hamburg. Although the switch meant giving up much of their home advantage, with large sections of the crowd in Dortmund yellow, the official attendance reached 45,917.
That crowd set a German Cup record for a match involving a fifth-tier team, while much of the revenue will go to the amateur club.
Inacio Brace Ends Any Hope Of An Upset
HEBC frustrated the 2024 Champions League finalists for the opening half-hour, but Dortmund’s pressure eventually broke through. The hosts conceded an own goal through defender Janek Wrede in the 33rd minute, before Daniel Svensson scored three minutes later.
Teenage forward Samuele Inacio, aged 18, then struck twice before the interval to remove any realistic danger of a shock result. Former Wolves forward Fabio Silva added Dortmund’s fifth just before the hour mark, completing a comfortable win for the visitors.

Dortmund’s next league assignment will take them to Sinsheim to face Hoffenheim on Saturday afternoon, with kick-off scheduled for 15:30 local time.
