Gabriel is reported to have informed Manchester United’s management of his wish to leave by sending a letter of resignation. The issue is understood to stem from frustration over what he feels were promises regarding a pathway into the first team, particularly during pre-season, that were not honoured.
Pre-Season Frustration and Missed Opportunities
Gabriel was included in four squads during pre-season but played only eight minutes. One notable example came when he travelled to Norway for the match against Rosenborg on 24 July but did not get onto the pitch, despite head coach Michael Carrick making 11 substitutions. Those changes included five players who have since left Manchester United, either on loan or permanently.
The teenager was then not registered for the Champions League encounter with Sabah FK last week. To take part, he would have needed to be included on Uefa’s A list of players, but he was left out. Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Gabriel, according to The Athletic. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also said to be attempting to sign him.
Regarded as one of the greatest talents in Manchester United’s academy, Gabriel came through the ranks at the club and is under contract with the Red Devils until next June. He is due to celebrate his 16th birthday on 6th October. If he holds an Irish or Cypriot passport – the nationalities of his parents – he could leave the club where he developed.

Manchester United sources are adamant that the intention was for Gabriel to be involved against Brighton in the Carabao Cup tonight. However, sources close to the player had no confidence that he would actually be given minutes on the pitch.
