Christian Eriksen Leaves VfL Wolfsburg After Mutual Contract Termination

• Christian Eriksen and VfL Wolfsburg have mutually agreed to end a contract that had been due to run until 30 June 2027

Eriksen’s Wolfsburg Spell Ends Early

Christian Eriksen has officially parted company with VfL Wolfsburg after the midfielder and the club reached a mutual agreement to terminate his deal ahead of schedule. The contract had originally been set to run until 30 June 2027.

The Denmark record international joined the Wolves on a free transfer a year ago, arriving with a CV that included more than 300 Premier League appearances and around 100 matches in the Champions League and Europa League.

Club Gives Eriksen Freedom Over His Future

VfL Wolfsburg Managing Director Sport Dieter Hecking said the club wanted Eriksen to be able to make the decision that was right for him.

“For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract,” says Managing Director Sport Dieter Hecking. “He has already experienced and achieved a great deal during his extraordinary career. That makes it all the more remarkable how approachable and down-to-earth we came to know him at VfL. Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans. We would like to thank Christian and wish him and his family all the very best.”

Family And Rehabilitation Now The Priority

Eriksen explained that being close to his family in Denmark is now his main focus. He had been living with an automatic defibrillator for six years, but in June suffered a relapse of his heart condition during a match between Denmark and Ukraine. He collapsed on the pitch, although he was able to leave the field under his own power.

Although he has been following a rehabilitation programme in Denmark, a return to action with Wolfsburg has not materialised since that incident, and he will now have to continue with it.

Christian Eriksen wrote: “At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together. My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows. I know that the club is now in good hands as it aims to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that a successful future lies ahead for VfL. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me during my time at VfL and in Wolfsburg. It was a great pleasure for me to play for you, and I will look back fondly on this period.”
