Early Brilliance and Clinical Finishing Define the First Half
Coming into the fixture, only Paris Saint-Germain had a longer run of consecutive wins in Ligue 1. Bruno Genesio’s revitalised side showcased their intent within two minutes. Pouncing on a loose ball in midfield, Amine Gouiri and Amine Harit executed a swift exchange, setting up Harit to curl a spectacular, first-time strike from 25 yards into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot.
Toulouse, who themselves were unbeaten in their previous five outings, responded well to going behind. Jacen Russell-Rowe tested Jeffrey de Lange with a curled shot, before the Marseille keeper demonstrated excellent reflexes to thwart Thomas Jorgensen’s close-range attempt.
On the 25-minute mark, Marseille capitalised on another defensive lapse from the visitors. A poor clearance by Rasmus Nicolaisen was headed down by Igor Paixao into Gouiri’s stride, allowing the forward to dispatch a precise shot across goal for the second. Shortly after, in-form Himad Abdelli looked certain to add a third but squandered his chance, chipping over the bar with only Guillaume Restes to beat.
Toulouse Threaten, But VAR and De Lange Deny a Comeback
Russell-Rowe spearheaded the visitors’ efforts to get back into the contest, twice coming close before half-time. Firstly, his delicate effort was cleared off the line by CJ Egan-Riley, before his instinctive shot was smothered by De Lange.
The duel between De Lange and Russell-Rowe resumed early in the second half, with the Marseille shot-stopper once again coming out on top, saving a volley from the Canadian forward from eight yards.
The game maintained its frenetic tempo as Casper Tengstedt fired over from close range, while Jorgensen’s volley was comfortably gathered by De Lange. Igor Paixao then struck a header against the post, underlining Marseille’s threat on the counter.
Toulouse looked to have pulled one back midway through the second period when Tengstedt tapped in from close range. However, a VAR review disallowed the goal due to an offside infraction after Santiago Hidalgo had nodded the ball back across. Hidalgo himself was later denied by the assistant’s flag as the visiting side’s pressure went unrewarded.
European Ambitions and Toulouse’s Struggles
Bruno Genesio’s men will look to translate this domestic momentum into continental competition as they travel to Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday, seeking their maiden points in this season’s UEFA Europa League. Meanwhile, this defeat leaves Toulouse mired in the congested lower half of the table, enduring anxious proximity to the relegation play-off zone – just two points clear.
