Rudiger scores in both nets in a thrilling Real Madrid victory over rivals Atletico

Real Madrid defeated neighbours Atletico Madrid 5:3 after extra-time in the first semi-final in the Spanish Super Cup. The match which was played in Riadh, Saudi Arabia, began with Atletico opening the score as early as the 6th minute, courtesy of Mario Hermoso header. The Real Madrid players appealed for a penalty on three separate occasions before equalizing in the 19th minute, but each time the referee waved to play. Then Antonio Rudiger restored the parity with another headed goal, before Ferland Mendy put Los Blancos 2:1 up with a nice flick just before the half-hour mark. Diego Simeone’s players then replied with a beautiful Antoine Griezmann goal, who managed to evade two defenders before putting the ball in the net with a precise finish from outside the box.

The 2nd period was not as eventful as the first, and both Madrid rivals scored a goal each. It was again Antonio Rudiger who scored, but this time in his own net with 78 minutes gone to put Atletico in front for second time in the game. Real’s captain Daniel Carvajal leveled the score with only 5 minutes of regular time remaining on the clock and the game entered extra-time.

The first 15 minute period did not produce any memorable moments, and Real had to wait until the 116th minute when Stefan Savic replicated nis counterpart Antonio Rudiger and scored his 2nd goal in the match, but it was in his own net. Brahim Diaz addded a 5th goal for Los Blancos in stoppage time to send Real to the Spanish Super Cup final.
