Luka Modric winds back the years with a match-winning performance against Sevilla

Luka Modric came off the bench to deliver all three points to Real Madrid in a thrilling LaLiga match against Sevilla on Sunday. The 38 year old midfielder has lost his starting spot in Real Madrid’s line-up and more often enters the field as a substitute, and that was the case last night but his impact was undeniable. The veteran playmaker entered the field in the 75th minute, and needed just 6 minutes to give Real the lead with a well-placed finish from outside the box. After 25 LaLiga rounds so far, Modric has started in 11 and has remained until the finish in only 2, while being replaced 9 times. 10 of his appearances have come from the bench and has been an unused substitute in 4 of Real Madrid’s league games.

After the match, Modric was elated with his contribution, and expressed his joy. “I’m so happy that I helped the team. It’s beautiful” he remarked, while adding, “This is our DNA. We never give up”. These comments not only reflect his personal satisfaction but also sum up the fighting spirit and resilience that Real Madrid is known for.

Luka Modric’s journey with Real Madrid began back in 2012 when he moved from Tottenham Hotspur for a reported fee of around €30 million. Since then, his remarkable journey with the club has been filled with memorable performances, key contributions, and a plethora of titles, further cementing his legacy as one of Real Madrid’s all-time greats. The Croatian has played a total of 517 matches across all competitions with the famous white shirt, winning the Champions League 5 times, LaLiga 3 times, and the Club World Cup on 4 occasions, among many other trophies. On a personal level, Modric was selected as the best footballer in the world in 2018, winning the Ballon d’Or. Back then, the Croatian became the first player outside of the Ronaldo-Messi duo to win the most prestigious individual award in football.
