Southampton returns to Premier League with a win against Leeds

Southampton have returned to the Premier League from the 1st attempt after spending the previous season in the Championship. The Saints defeated Leeds via slender 1-0 score in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Sunday. Adam Armstrong scored the only goal of the game in the 24th minute after being sent one on one with Leeds’ goalkeeper by a precise William Smallbone pass.

Leeds held the ball for 59% of the match, but ended the game with just two shots on target, one of which was deep in stoppage time. Daniel James was unlucky to see his rocket of a shot bounce off the cross-bar in the 84th minute, and that was one of a few interesting episodes. Southampton had a low defence, soaking up the pressure and not allowing Leeds any scoring chances. Now, Leeds will have a rest before preparing another charge towards the Premier League, while the Saints’ will be in high spirits, expeting their return to the English top-flight.
