Georgia’s hero Mikautadze makes U-turn, chooses Lyon over Monaco

Georges Mikautadze, Georgia’s standout player at Euro 2024, is on the verge of completing a dramatic transfer to Lyon. Despite having a medical booked and an agreement in place with AS Monaco, Mikautadze’s move was hijacked by Lyon at the last moment. The Georgian forward is set to join Lyon from Metz for a transfer fee of €18 million.

Mikautadze, who scored three goals and provided one assist in four matches at Euro 2024, will sign a contract with Lyon that runs until June 2029. He has already arrived in Lyon today and is set to undergo medical tests to finalize his move.

According to sources in Georgia, Mikautadze was not attracted by the option of moving to Monaco without a guarantee of playing as a center forward and decided to decline their offer. Similarly, he refused Roma, who also considered him for a winger position. Mikautadze’s primary condition was to play as a center forward, and he sought assurances for this role. Mikautadze spoke with Lyon’s coach and received a guarantee that he would only be considered for the center forward position and that played a crucial role in his decision to join Lyon.

His impressive performances at Euro 2024, where he helped Georgia reach the round of last-16 in their first-ever appearance at a continental tournament, undoubtedly raised his profile and attracted interest from multiple clubs.
