Liverpool activates Martin Zubimendi’s €60 million release clause

Liverpool is making strides to bolster their midfield by targeting Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad. With a €60 million release clause in his contract, Liverpool has taken action by triggering it, paving the way for the Spanish midfielder to move to Anfield.

Negotiations have been ongoing, and Real Sociedad sources indicate that Zubimendi is open to the transfer. With the release clause activated, the main hurdle now is agreeing on personal terms, after which Zubimendi will undergo medical tests.

In a past interview with The Guardian, former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso, who coached Zubimendi at Real Sociedad B, praised the midfielder’s qualities: “Martin’s a player all coaches would want. He’s generous, he always thinks more about his teammates than himself. He has that ability to generate play, to make those around him better, always offering solutions; to improve the move. He understands what the next step is before the ball gets to him. He has that ability to organize the axis. I loved working with him.”

Liverpool remains confident in finalizing the deal, aiming to secure Zubimendi as a key addition to their squad. The midfielder was part of Spain’s team that went on to win Euro 2024 by defeating England in the final.
