Historic win secures San Marino’s first promotion in UEFA’s Nations League

Last night in the UEFA Nations League, San Marino defeated Liechtenstein 3-1 away from home. With the victory, San Marino topped their group with 7 points, while Liechtenstein ended at the bottom with just 2 points. By securing 1st place in the group, San Marino has earned its first promotion to League C, capping a historic campaign for the team.

The hosts initially took the lead in the 40th minute through Aron Sele. San Marino mounted a strong second-half comeback, beginning with an equalizer from Lorenzo Lazzari in the 46th minute. Nicola Nanni then put the visitors ahead by converting a penalty in the 66th minute, and Alessandro Golinucci sealed the win with a goal in the 76th minute.

The victory is only the third in San Marino’s history and was their first competitive away victory, as well as their first-ever comeback triumph. It also stands as their biggest win, marking the first time they have scored three goals in a single match. Curiously, all of San Marino’s three victories have come against Liechtenstein.
