The players of Bayern Munich applaud their supporters

    Key Takeaways:

  • Bayern Munich secured a record 34th Bundesliga title after Bayer Leverkusen failed to win against Freiburg
  • Thomas Muller claimed his 13th league title and is set to leave the club in the summer
  • Harry Kane and Eric Dier both won the first trophies of their careers

Bayern Munich are officially the new champions of Germany. The Bavarians won a record 34th Bundesliga title after Bayer Leverkusen failed to win their away match against Freiburg, drawing 2:2. Bayern had the chance to secure the title on Saturday, but allowed a late equaliser for 3:3 against RB Leipzig.

Now holding an unassailable eight-point lead, Bayern are unreachable at the top with two rounds to go. The title comes in the debut season of head coach Vincent Kompany. The campaign was marked by strong league form, though disappointments remain from a Champions League quarterfinal exit to Inter and yet another early exit in the German Cup, also at the hands of Leverkusen.

Bayern’s remaining fixtures include a home game against Borussia Monchengladbach and a visit to Hoffenheim. The title celebrations and trophy ceremony are expected to take place after the match at the Allianz Arena.

These matches will also be the final Bundesliga appearances for club legend Thomas Muller. The 35-year-old veteran will leave the club this summer as a free agent. He holds the club record for most appearances and has now won the Bundesliga 13 times, equalling Ryan Giggs’ Premier League tally. Muller also matches Toni Kroos as the German player with the most trophies – 34. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer follows with 12 league titles, ranking second in that category.

The triumph also marks the first major career title for Bayern and England striker Harry Kane. The 31-year-old had lost two European Championship finals with England, a Champions League final with Tottenham, and two Carabao Cup finals. He also finished second in the Premier League in 2016/17 when Chelsea won the title. Kane even lost the German Super Cup final on his Bayern debut against RB Leipzig. That personal drought is now officially over.

Eric Dier, Kane’s close friend and teammate, also celebrates his first career title. He will leave Bayern in the summer.
