Chelsea set to beat Manchester United in race for Liam Delap’s signature

Liam Delap celebrates after scoring another goal for Ipswich

    Key Takeaways:

  • Chelsea are set to sign Ipswich star Liam Delap by triggering his £30m clause
  • Manchester United were also ready to pay but are losing the race
  • Champions League football and Enzo Maresca’s influence swayed Delap’s decision

Just as it happened in the European club finals this season, Chelsea win while Manchester United lose. The same appears to be unfolding in the transfer market, as the London Blues are on the verge of signing Ipswich star Liam Delap. The Conference League winners this season are set to trigger the release clause of the 22-year-old striker, which is around £30 million.

Delap had been one of Manchester United’s transfer targets, with the Red Devils showing strong interest and also prepared to meet his release clause. However, it now looks like Chelsea will come out on top in the race for the player’s signature.

Qualification for the Champions League and the backing of Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca are said to have been key factors in the decision of the England youth international to join Stamford Bridge.

Delap scored 12 goals in 36 Premier League matches last season but was unable to help Ipswich avoid relegation. He is expected to sign a long-term deal with Chelsea.
