Trent Alexander-Arnold celebrates after scoring against West Ham

    Key Takeaways:

  • Liverpool agreed to release Trent Alexander-Arnold early so he can join Real Madrid for the Club World Cup
  • The English side will receive €11.9 million including June wages
  • Alexander-Arnold signs with Real Madrid until 2031 with a €1 billion release clause

Liverpool agreed to release Trent Alexander-Arnold before the expiration of his contract, allowing the right-back to play for Real Madrid at the upcoming Club World Cup. In return, the Spanish giants will pay Liverpool €10 million plus his salary for June. This brings the total compensation for the Reds to €11.9 million or £10 million. The move was officially confirmed by the English club, stating that from 1 June – when the transfer window opens – Trent Alexander-Arnold will become a Real Madrid player. Los Blancos also confirmed the transfer in an official statement.

The contract signed by Alexander-Arnold with the Spanish champions runs until June 2031. According to Fabrizio Romano, the release clause in the new deal is €1 billion.

Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool after spending 20 years at the club, having joined the academy at just six years old. He made his debut for the first team in October 2016 and departs with 354 matches, 23 goals and eight major trophies to his name.

Real Madrid’s initial proposal for an early release was just €1 million, which Liverpool rejected. Eventually, the Merseyside club agreed to a much more favourable figure for a player who was otherwise set to leave as a free agent. Back in January, the Santiago Bernabeu club had offered €40 million for the right-back, but the Reds turned it down while still hoping for a contract renewal.
