Bruno Fernandes turns down Saudi millions to stay at Manchester United

    Key Takeaways:

  • Bruno Fernandes declined a £700,000-per-week offer from Al Hilal to remain at Old Trafford
  • Manchester United were ready to receive £100 million for their captain
  • The Portuguese star believes he still belongs at the top of European football

Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, has made the difficult decision to turn down the Saudi millions and remain at Old Trafford, where he continues to serve as team leader. The Portuguese star received a staggering offer from Al Hilal, a club that already features his compatriots Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves, as well as Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

According to English media reports, the offer – long known to the public – included a weekly salary of £700,000, while Manchester United would have collected £100 million for his transfer. Fernandes suffered yet another disappointment with the Red Devils in the Europa League final and reportedly gave long thought to the offer from Saudi Arabia. Ultimately, however, he rejected it – a decision confirmed by respected journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The 30-year-old midfielder has two years remaining on his current contract and believes he still has the quality to perform at the highest level of European football, even for less money.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are planning major reinforcements following their embarrassing 15th-place finish in the Premier League. Matheus Cunha has already joined from Wolverhampton, and the next expected signing is Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, who is valued at £50 million.
