Portugal stun hosts Germany to reach Nations League final

Cristiano Ronaldo scores in Germany's net

    Key Takeaways:

  • Portugal beat hosts Germany 2:1 at Allianz Arena to book a spot in the final
  • Francisco Conceicao and Cristiano Ronaldo overturned Florian Wirtz’s opener
  • Portugal now eye a second title in the competition after their 2019 triumph

Portugal secured a place in the UEFA Nations League final after defeating host nation Germany 2:1 at the Allianz Arena. The Iberians completed a comeback victory in the semifinal clash, ending Germany’s unbeaten run in the tournament.

After a goalless first half, the hosts took the lead through Florian Wirtz in the 48th minute. However, Portugal responded strongly, equalising via Francisco Conceicao in the 63rd before Cristiano Ronaldo netted the winner just five minutes later to turn the match around.

Germany had advanced to the Final Four after topping their group and eliminating Italy in the quarterfinals with an aggregate score of 4:3 (1:0, 3:3). Portugal, too, had impressed in the competition, bouncing back from a 0:1 first-leg quarterfinal loss to Denmark with a 5:2 win in the return fixture.

This semifinal win comes nearly six years to the day after Portugal claimed the inaugural UEFA Nations League title on 5 June 2019, when they beat the Netherlands 1:0. A win in the upcoming final would make Portugal the first nation to lift the trophy twice.

Germany, reaching the final stage of the Nations League for the first time, will now play for third place against the loser of the second semifinal between defending champions Spain (2023) and France (2021 winners).
