  • Luis Diaz scored a brilliant solo goal
  • Enzo Fernandez was sent off in a frustrating match for him

Argentina and Colombia could not find a winner in their World Cup qualifier at the Monumental in Buenos Aires, as the match ended 1:1. Argentina had already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup and even clinched top spot in the CONMEBOL zone in advance, but Colombia were in need of points to boost their chances of finishing in the top 6 and securing a direct spot.

Messi could have opened the scoring early on, but after a one-two with Enzo Fernandez, he fired over the bar. In the 22nd minute, Colombian goalkeeper Kevin Mier parried a dangerous shot from Julian Alvarez. Shortly after, Luis Diaz silenced the crowd. The Liverpool winger breezed past nearly the entire defence of Argentina and elegantly slotted the ball past Emiliano Martinez. The hosts tried to respond before the break and pushed the opponent deep into their half. In the 30th minute, Enzo Fernandez equalised, but his goal was ruled out for offside. The Colombians defended with great discipline, which created many problems for the world champions.

In the 63rd minute, Nico Gonzalez took a diagonal shot, Mier saved it, but the ball came back to the Juventus player. He then passed to Enzo Fernandez, who from a clear position shot wide. The Chelsea midfielder definitely did not have a good day and was sent off in the 70th minute for a rough foul in the middle of the pitch. However, Argentina continued to attack even with a man down. In the 78th minute, Messi gave way to Exequiel Palacios, and in the 81st minute, Thiago Almada restored the draw.

Until the end, Colombia pushed more for the win and came close to it, but in the 86th minute Richard Rios hit the post with a header. It was a third consecutive draw for Nestor Lorenzo’s team and their sixth straight match without a win. In the remaining two rounds, Colombia will host Bolivia and visit Venezuela.
