Modric, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner and the most successful player in the Spanish club’s history, will join Milan after playing his final game for Real at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Since his arrival from Tottenham in 2012, the 39-year-old played 597 matches, scored 43 goals, and delivered 95 assists. During his stay in the Spanish capital, Modric won 28 trophies with Real, including six UEFA Champions League titles.
“This is not the ending we hoped for, it’s a bitter one, but he won’t be remembered for today’s match — rather for many great things,” said Alonso, who shared the pitch with Modric as a teammate during his own time at Real.
“He’s a legend of world football and of Real Madrid. He will be remembered for far more good things than the 25 minutes he played today,” the coach added.
