Napoli’s defensive target Sam Beukema is in Rome to undergo medical examinations before finalising his transfer from Bologna. Once completed, the Dutch centre-back will immediately join his new teammates in Dimaro, where Napoli have begun their pre-season training.

The reigning Italian champions will pay Bologna €31 million including bonuses for the 26-year-old defender. Beukema has agreed to a five-year contract, which will see him earn a salary of €3 million per season. He was the main target for manager Antonio Conte to strengthen the club’s defence.

Beukema’s arrival follows the medical tests of striker Lorenzo Lucca, who is also set to join Napoli, and the official announcement of the signing of winger Noa Lang, another Dutchman.

On Sunday, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis made headlines by promising that the club will construct a new stadium within three years. When asked about the club’s chances of succeeding in the Champions League, he stated that such outcomes are not entirely in his hands. De Laurentiis made the remarks following the high-profile additions of Kevin De Bruyne and Noa Lang.
