Laporta Claims Decisive Victory in Club Election

Joan Laporta has been re-elected as president of FC Barcelona after securing just over 68% of the votes cast in Sunday’s club election. The announcement from the La Liga giants confirmed that Laporta will embark on his second-consecutive, and fourth overall, term in office beginning 1 July. His main challenger, Victor Font, garnered almost 30% of the vote, with the remainder either void or invalid. Laporta, who first assumed the presidency in 2003 and famously appointed Pep Guardiola as manager, previously returned to the role in March 2021. He stood down last month, in accordance with club rules, to seek a fresh mandate from the membership.

Electoral Process and Supporter Turnout

The club revealed a total of nearly 48,500 votes were cast, representing a turnout of 42.34%. Laporta collected 32,934 votes, while 53-year-old Font received 14,385. Reflecting on the result, Laporta described his victory as “resounding”, expressing gratitude towards the members, and referring to the process as a “celebration of democracy and civic spirit”. Laporta declared, “It makes us unstoppable. No-one will stop us. Exciting years lie ahead. They will be the best of our lives.” He emphasised the uniqueness of the club, saying, “This is a wonderful club, where the members elect their president and their board of directors. A club unique in the world, truly extraordinary.”

Laporta’s Pledges and Club Ambitions

Laporta has outlined ambitions for his presidency, vowing to further strengthen the first team and to complete the ongoing redevelopment of the Nou Camp stadium. Stressing unity and determination among fans and officials, he pledged that they would “defend Barca against everything and everyone”.

Current Form and Upcoming Challenges

Despite well-documented financial challenges in recent seasons, Barcelona achieved a domestic treble last season. The Catalan side currently sit four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, after an emphatic 5-2 victory over Sevilla on Sunday, highlighted by a hat-trick from Raphinha. Looking ahead, Barcelona will face Newcastle United on Wednesday in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. The first leg ended 1-1 at St James’ Park last week, with Lamine Yamal equalising for the visitors via a 96th-minute penalty.
