Global football icon Lionel Messi is set to return in December to his boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys. According to reports from Argentina, the superstar has decided not to extend his contract with Inter Miami, despite earlier expectations that he would stay for at least one more season in MLS. Messi plans to end his career where it all began. He joined Inter Miami in 2023 and has had a massive impact on both the club and the league.

According to Newell’s President Ignacio Astore, Argentine Football Association chief Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia is “working every day to convince Messi to return to Newell’s.”

Messi left Argentina for Spain at the age of 13 to join Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, where he developed into one of the greatest players of all time. His return would mark a full-circle moment more than two decades after his departure.
