Palmeiras beat Al Ahly 2:0 after own goal, VAR drama and weather delay

Palmeiras and Al Ahly players battle for the ball

    Key Takeaways:

  • Palmeiras benefited from a bizarre own goal by Wesam Abu Ali and a composed finish by Flaco Lopez to secure a 2:0 win
  • Raphael Veiga initially received a red card, but the decision was overturned after VAR review
  • The match was temporarily halted due to poor weather conditions before resuming from the 63rd minute

Contrary to expectations, the Egyptians started the match better, and in the sixth minute, Abu Ali headed the ball from a corner, but his attempt was well off target. After two promising Brazilian attacks were stopped due to fouls, in the 18th minute Estevao tried a low shot, but failed to find the target.

In the 37th minute, Raphael Veiga received a direct red card after a rough challenge on the opponent’s legs. Shortly after, the main referee reviewed the incident and decided he had made the wrong call, overturning the red card and showing only a yellow to the Palmeiras player.

In the 49th minute, Wesam Abu Ali attempted to clear the ball after a cross into the box, but instead unintentionally sent it into the top right corner of his own net – 1:0 for Palmeiras. The goal was reviewed for several minutes, but in the end it was allowed to stand.

Ten minutes later, Flaco Lopez received a killer pass, found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and slipped the ball into the bottom corner – 2:0 for Palmeiras.

Shortly after, the match was interrupted due to bad weather. Eventually, the pause ended and the players returned to the pitch, resuming play from the 63rd minute of the match. The first two missed chances after the restart came from Torres and Jose Lopez. There were not any dangerous chances after that and the Brazilians won an important three points.
