RB Leipzig sign Bakayoko, Maksimovic and Diomande in major summer rebuild

RB Leipzig new signing Yohan Bakayoko

    Key Takeaways:

  • Johan Bakayoko joined from PSV in a €20M deal after long-standing interest
  • Leipzig also signed Andrija Maksimovic and Jan Diomande this week
  • New coach Ole Werner shaping a younger, faster and more intense team

RB Leipzig signed winger Johan Bakayoko from Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven on a five-year contract until 2030, the Bundesliga club confirmed. The deal is worth €18 million, with the potential to rise to €20 million through additional agreements. Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund were also interested in the player.

“We have had Johan Bakayoko on our radar for several years and have tried multiple times to bring him in. Now we are even happier that he chose to join our club, despite many teams fighting for his signature,” said Leipzig’s managing director for sport Marcel Schafer.

“With his strength, explosiveness, speed and eye for goal, he will improve our game down the right wing, bringing strengths both on and off the ball,” Schafer added.

The 22-year-old Belgian international arrived in Leipzig on the same day as Serbian teenager Andrija Maksimovic from Red Star Belgrade. Maksimovic also signed a contract until 2030 and is reported to have cost €14 million.

“These latest additions are a preview of the new playing style we aim to implement over the next few weeks – it will be intense, energetic and fast, with young, hungry and promising players,” Schafer explained.

RB Leipzig are reshaping their squad under new coach Ole Werner after finishing seventh in the Bundesliga last season, which means the club will miss out on European football for the first time since reaching the German top flight nine years ago.

On Wednesday, the club also unveiled winger Jan Diomande, who joined from Leganes for €20 million.
