Wolves Stand Firm: Newcastle’s £50m Offer for Jørgen Strand Larsen Rejected Ahead of Transfer Deadline

Wolverhampton forward Jorgen Strand Larsen
  • Wolves have turned down a £50m proposal from Newcastle for striker Jørgen Strand Larsen before the transfer window deadline on Monday.
  • Strand Larsen netted 14 Premier League goals last season following his £23m arrival in July from Celta Vigo.
  • Wolves have already sold Matheus Cunha and Rayan Aït-Nouri, and lost Nélson Semedo to Fenerbahce this summer.

Wolves Reject Lucrative Bid for Key Striker

Wolverhampton Wanderers have dismissed a £50m approach from Newcastle United for their Norwegian striker Jørgen Strand Larsen, insisting he will not be sold before the transfer window shuts on Monday. The Molineux club acknowledged Newcastle’s strong interest, but maintain that losing Strand Larsen at this stage is not an option, describing him as irreplaceable given his goalscoring record and the timing of the bid.

Newcastle’s Striking Crisis and Wolves’ Position

Newcastle find themselves without a natural No 9, as Alexander Isak continues to be sidelined through injury and Callum Wilson departed at the end of his contract. Wolves’ head coach, Vítor Pereira, considers Strand Larsen his only senior striker, further highlighting the importance of retaining the 25-year-old forward.

Strand Larsen’s Impact and Injury Update

Strand Larsen, who signed for Wolves in a £23m move in July following a fruitful loan spell from Celta Vigo, found the net 14 times in the Premier League last season. He was substituted during Wolves’ recent defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday due to a minor achilles issue, according to Pereira.

Player Movements at Molineux

The summer has seen significant player movement at Wolves, with Matheus Cunha and Rayan Aït-Nouri both departing, while former captain Nélson Semedo chose to join Fenerbahce after turning down fresh terms at Molineux.

Pereira remains hopeful of finding a permanent solution for Fábio Silva, who cost £35m in 2020, while the futures of Hwang Hee-chan and Sasa Kalajdzic also remain uncertain ahead of the transfer deadline.

Newcastle’s Transfer Pursuits and Wolves’ Recruitment Plans

Newcastle’s efforts to strengthen their attacking options have so far come up short. The club previously tried and failed to secure the signing of Yoane Wissa, with Brentford said to be holding out for what they view as a fair price. Benjamin Sesko opted to join Manchester United, while both Liam Delap and João Pedro moved to Chelsea despite Newcastle’s interest.

On the recruitment front, Pereira is aiming to bolster his squad with at least three new additions prior to the window closing. Wolves are prioritising a central defender—pursuing Girona’s Ladislav Krejci—a central midfielder, and a versatile forward.
