Showpiece Spain-Argentina Finalissima in Qatar in Doubt Amid escalating Middle East Tensions

Promotion of Finalissima clash between Spain and Argentina

Key Takeaways:

  • Spain and Argentina are set to contest the Finalissima at Lusail Stadium, Doha, on March 27
  • Recent missile attacks and unrest have caused all football activities in Qatar to be postponed
  • Spanish FA insists plans for the Argentina and Egypt fixtures remain, pending security assurances

Unrest Casts Shadow Over International Fixture

Spain, fresh off their Euro 2024 triumph, are scheduled to take on World and South American champions Argentina in the latest edition of the Finalissima, which brings together confederation winners. The high-profile encounter is slated for 27 March at the Lusail Stadium near Doha, Qatar.

However, the ongoing Middle East conflict has threatened the staging of this match. Following missile strikes across Qatar and neighbouring countries in response to US-led actions that led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the region has been gripped by security concerns and widespread sheltering.

Qatari Football Postponed Amid Missile Attacks

Due to the dangerous situation, the Qatari Football Association has suspended all domestic football activities, prioritising the safety of local residents and personnel. Despite this, the Spanish Football Federation is pressing ahead with plans for the Argentina showdown, as well as a friendly against Egypt to be held in Doha days afterwards.

Spanish FA Stresses Commitment to Fixtures

Spanish FA general secretary Alvaro De Miguel stated: “The situation there is worrying, but the Finalissima is not suspended.

“Qatar has informed us that it has suspended its competitions until further notice, but that does not mean this match is suspended.

“We have our sporting plans to play against Argentina and Egypt.

“We maintain that desire, although it is true that we have to wait.

“It is premature to make a diagnosis regarding whether the match will be played or whether it will be played in Qatar or not.

“We will hold working meetings with Uefa and [South American confederation] Conmebol to assess the real scope of the conflict and see how we manage this match.

“It is premature to make an assessment, but this week will be decisive in knowing what will happen with this match.

“We need to have the guarantee that, wherever we play, there is a state of security and calm for us. I hope to have news soon.”

UEFA’s Stance and Future Uncertainty

UEFA is currently maintaining a cautious approach, closely monitoring the developments and hoping for a peaceful resolution in the region ahead of the Finalissima. Should the instability persist, serious questions remain whether either side would be willing to travel and compete amid ongoing security risks.
