Edwards Defies Expectations, Spurs Stunned at Home

The Minnesota Timberwolves secured a narrow 104-102 win against the San Antonio Spurs in the opening game of the Western Conference semifinals on Monday night, as Anthony Edwards made a surprising return from injury. Edwards, who had sustained a bone bruise and hyperextended his left knee during Game 4 of Minnesota’s opening-round series against Denver on April 25, was initially ruled out for at least the first two games. However, he returned to court and notched 18 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. His performance helped hand San Antonio only their second defeat in their last 17 home series openers.

Timberwolves veteran Mike Conley remarked, “Nobody expected him to play. It was just his level of commitment to the game. Not just to the game, but to his teammates. It showed a lot.”

Wembanyama’s Record Defensive Effort Not Enough

Victor Wembanyama marked his playoff debut with a historical defensive performance, amassing 12 blocks to set a new NBA postseason benchmark. Wembanyama’s stat line also included 11 points and 15 rebounds, making him just the third player since the league started tracking blocks in 1973-74 to register a playoff triple-double including blocks. The NBA Defensive Player of the Year blocked seven shots in the first half alone, starting the contest by rejecting two consecutive layup attempts from Terrence Shannon Jr. and later swatting away Rudy Gobert’s drive.

Despite Wembanyama’s dominance defensively, the Spurs fell just short. San Antonio narrowed the margin to 104-102 following Devin Vassell’s steal and a layup from Dylan Harper with 31 seconds left. After Julius Randle missed at the other end, Julian Champagnie could not convert a three-pointer at the final buzzer.

Wembanyama stated, “We have to be better. It shows up on the stat sheet. We need to figure out before 48 hours what we can do better and I’ve got no doubt that we will. I trust us.”

Team and Player Performances

Julius Randle was pivotal for the Timberwolves, tallying 21 points and grabbing 10 boards. For San Antonio, Harper led the way with 18 points, with both Champagnie and Stephon Castle contributing 17 apiece. Edwards, although not starting and entering the game with 6:53 to go in the first quarter and Minnesota trailing 11-8, was remarkably effective, finishing 8-for-13 from the field in 25 minutes of play.

Minnesota were without guards Donte DiVincenzo and Ayo Dosunmu due to injuries, placing further significance on Edwards’ return. Edwards commented, “I know for a fact, just me being out there, it calms everybody down. Not saying there’s any pressure on any of my teammates, but it takes pressure off of everybody just knowing that I’m out there, I’m available to play, yeah. And just doing what I do best, just trying to put the ball in the hoop.”

After knocking down an early stepback three-pointer, Edwards looked to the Spurs bench and shouted, “I’m back! I’m back!”
