  • The deal included €40.5m in guaranteed fees and €4.5m in performance-related bonuses
  • Atalanta believe the decision was unrelated to medical results or injury concerns

Manchester United Cancel Ederson Deal Following World Cup Involvement

Manchester United have unexpectedly decided not to proceed with the acquisition of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, abandoning a transfer worth €45m. The Premier League club had previously established an agreement in June to secure Ederson’s services for €40.5m in set fees plus an additional €4.5m in bonuses.

The final steps of the deal were delayed due to Ederson’s participation with Brazil at the 2026 World Cup. Once Brazil’s campaign ended, United requested further intensive medical tests before granting final approval.

Ederson Clears Medicals But United Walk Away

Reports from Fabrizio Romano and others confirm that Ederson completed all supplementary medical testing within the past 48 hours. Despite this, Manchester United formally informed Atalanta of their withdrawal from the transaction.

According to Atalanta, this decision was not influenced by any negative findings in the medical examinations or the prospect of a long-term injury. The Italian club maintain that such fitness concerns would have precluded Ederson from joining Brazil’s World Cup squad.

Future Uncertain for Atalanta Midfielder

With Ederson’s contract valid until June 2028, Atalanta must now decide whether to retain him under incoming head coach Maurizio Sarri or look for potential buyers elsewhere in the transfer market.
