Despite a charged atmosphere in Porto, Benfica started assertively and created early chances. Heorhiy Sudakov came close to putting the visitors in front, his powerful run down the left culminating in a shot blocked by Jan Bednarek. The visitors continued to apply pressure, with Gianluca Prestianni heading over from a Rafa Silva cross at the far post. Alexander Bah then saw his volley dramatically cleared off the line by Pablo Rosario, heightening the sense that missed opportunities could prove costly for Benfica.
Turning Points in the Encounter
Porto made Benfica pay for their wasted chances in the 31st minute, when Pepe floated a cross over the top and Gabri Veiga expertly brought the ball down before slotting beneath Samuel Soares. The effort narrowly crossed the goal line, giving the hosts the advantage.
Benfica’s situation deteriorated less than five minutes later, as Clement Lenglet received a red card for a flick of the hand in Andre Silva’s face. Reduced to ten men, Benfica faced an uphill battle after the interval.
