Paixao Back In Full Training After PSG Injury Concern

Olympique de Marseille received encouraging news on Igor Paixao (26), who has resumed first-team training after concerns that he had suffered a significant injury during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to fierce rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazilian winger was forced off in the first half of that match, with Angel Gomes coming on in his place. Gomes later scored for OM, but the immediate post-match focus also turned to Paixao’s condition. Bruno Genesio initially suggested after the game that Paixao had suffered an ankle problem, although L’Équipe later reported that the issue involved the top of the fibula following an awkward landing. Medical tests had been scheduled.

Paixao had already attempted to ease fears himself, stating on Instagram that he was “not injured”. That assessment appeared to be supported on Wednesday, when images released through Marseille’s club channels showed him training normally with his team-mates.

Marseille Fixtures Remain In Focus

Paixao, whom Bruno Genesio fought hard to keep over the summer, should therefore be available when Marseille face Troyes on 11th October. OM will then continue their UEFA Europa League campaign four days later, when they host Olympiacos at the Vélodrome.

Cornelius Hospitalised While On Canada Duty

Marseille also received more worrying news regarding Derek Cornelius (28), who has been taken to hospital after sustaining an injury while away with the Canada national team. The development was confirmed by a communiqué from the Federation on Wednesday.

Cornelius returned to Marseille over the summer after spending last season on loan at Rangers. He has not featured heavily so far this season, playing just 26 minutes in Ligue 1 and a further 67 minutes in the UEFA Europa League. His start against Besiktas in the UEL had indicated that he could serve as a rotation option in what is a threadbare OM squad.

However, his injury represents another setback for Bruno Genesio. As revealed on CANMNT’s official X account, Cornelius suffered a non-contact lower-body injury during Wednesday’s training session in Toronto. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he is receiving care and will undergo further assessment.
