Bayern Cruise Without Kane After Ballon d’Or Tribute

Newly-crowned Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane did not feature as Bayern Munich swept past second-tier 1. FC Magdeburg with a 6-1 victory in the DFB-Pokal last 32 on Wednesday.

Before the match, Kane was given a guard of honour by his Bayern team-mates, while 75,000 supporters at the Allianz Arena paid tribute to his Ballon d’Or success, which had come two days earlier in London.

Olise opened the scoring after 10 minutes, turning in an excellent assist from Saibari at close range. Magdeburg, despite arriving as clear outsiders, equalised five minutes later through Mateusz Zukowski.

The hosts regained control midway through the first half when Olise supplied Saibari, reversing the combination from the opener. Olise then scored Bayern’s third from the penalty spot early in the second half.

Teenage forward Lennart Karl later created goals for Davies and Brown, before Santos Daiber completed the scoring in stoppage time. Kane remained on the bench throughout, with Bayern keeping Saturday’s home Bundesliga meeting with Borussia Dortmund in mind.

Kompany Discharged as Bayern Receive Major Update

Bayern also received important news before the match, with head coach Vincent Kompany discharged from hospital, five days after collapsing at training on Friday.

Bayern Munich Board Member for Sport Max Eberl confirmed the development in an ARD interview ahead of the 6-1 DFB-Pokal win over Magdeburg.

“He was discharged from hospital today,” Eberl confirmed. “I think that’s the biggest and best news for all of us.”

Eberl also revealed the medical diagnosis behind Kompany’s hospitalisation.

“They’ve found out what it is,” Eberl said. “It’s an irritation of the meninges that caused the incident last Friday.”

Kompany collapsed during Bayern’s reserve-team training session on October 23 and spent several days in hospital undergoing examinations. In his absence, assistant coach Aaron Danks has taken charge of the first team.

Eberl explained that Kompany’s recovery will involve rest and medication. Bayern will wait for medical clearance before the Belgian resumes his duties, with Eberl expressing confidence that he will eventually return at full capacity while stressing that he will be given the time required to recover.

The Bayern executive also said doctors had concluded that Kompany’s earlier viral illness and hip problems were not connected to his collapse.

“This is a condition that could strike any one of us,” Eberl explained. “This has nothing to do with the pressure associated with the Bundesliga.”

Eberl nevertheless acknowledged the exceptional demands of coaching and the intensity with which Kompany approaches his role. Bayern have previously indicated that their head coach’s recovery could take several weeks.

Players Stress Unity During Difficult Period

The emotional impact of recent events was clear in the reaction from Bayern’s players after Wednesday’s cup win. Stand-in captain Jonathan Tah admitted the squad had been affected not only by Kompany’s hospitalisation but also by the death of Joshua Kimmich’s father.

“I’d be lying if I said it didn’t affect us, because we’re all human beings. And of course you feel for those involved,” Tah told ARD. “When you think about what we can do right now, it’s to show on the pitch what we showed today.”

Midfielder Tom Bischof also spoke emotionally after the victory when interviewed by Sky Germany.

“This is now my second year at Bayern, and I’ve learned what Bayern means,” the 21-year-old said. “It’s a family.”

Bischof praised the way players and club staff have supported one another during a difficult spell, underlining the importance of including everyone in the collective response.
