When Is the Pro Bowl Held?

The NFL Pro Bowl differs from the all-star games of other leagues in that it takes place toward the end of the season rather than midway through the season. The first-ever Pro Bowl was held at the beginning of 1951, several weeks after the league’s final championship game.

Between 1970 and 2009, it took place during the first weekend following the Super Bowl. In 2010, it was moved to the weekend before the Big Game and has taken place on this date ever since. Players from the two franchises participating in the Super Bowl do not take part.

How Are Participating Players Selected?

A consensus vote is used to determine each Pro Bowl roster, with coaches, fans, and players all having a say in the selection process. The NFL is the only professional sports league in the US that considers the votes of fans during the selection. Each competing team comprises 18 defensive players, 21 offensive players, and 5 specialists, for a total of 44 players per side.

1. Who Is Eligible for Consideration?

   Players are eligible for consideration provided they have been among the initial picks to a given team or have been invited to the all-star event as replacements. Members of the two teams competing in the Super Bowl do not participate in the Pro Bowl but are replaced instead. Replacements who decline participation are not deemed Pro Bowlers.

2. Monetary Prizes

   All participating players are eligible for monetary prizes, but those on the losing team receive smaller checks. The losing side at the 2022 Pro Bowl received $40,000, compared to the winners who made twice as much, or $80,000 apiece.

Various rule adjustments have been introduced to prevent this from happening. Here are the latest changes that took effect for the 2022 Pro Bowl.

1. Coin Toss

   The referee flips a coin at the beginning of the game, with each side choosing heads or tails in advance. The side that wins the coin toss may select one of two privileges, while the losing team receives the other. The privileges in question are “spot” and “choose”.

   • The team with the “spot” privilege chooses the field position of the ball for the first play of the first quarter.
   • The team with the “choose” privilege decides whether to start the game on defense or offense. This privilege is always exercised after the “spot” option. The team that lost the initial coin toss gets to pick from the two privileges at the beginning of the second half.

2. Rules for the Scoring Team after Field Goals

   The team that scores a field goal or successfully converts a try attempt has two options. It can either give the ball to the second team at that team’s 25-yard line or take possession at its own 25-yard line. The scoring team retains possession of the ball if it succeeds in making a first down; otherwise, the rival team assumes possession.

3. Clock Rules

   The standard 40/25 rule was replaced by a 35/25-second clock during the last all-star event. It starts upon the referee’s cue following an incomplete pass, which is not the case under the standard timing rules. However, this special rule does not apply inside the final two minutes of the first half or the final five minutes of the second half.

4. Other Pro Bowl-Specific Rules

   Apart from the above-listed changes, intentional grounding is not penalized. Rushing on passing plays is allowed only for tackles and defensive-end players. Blindside blocking and blocking below the waist are strictly prohibited. The defensive team is also barred from using the blitz tactic.
