NFL Pro Bowl Betting Overview

The Pro Bowl is the NFL’s annual all-star event, featuring top players from the league’s two conferences near the end of the season. Although the event does not attract the same level of attention as the Super Bowl, being selected for participation remains one of the greatest accomplishments a professional football player can achieve.

Traditional Pro Bowl games did not attract as much interest as regular-season matchups and lost some of their luster over the years. Defensive play was heavily restricted to protect the league’s most talented players from injuries. Significant rule differences also prohibited high-risk moves such as tackling and kickoffs.

When Is the Pro Bowl Held?

The NFL Pro Bowl differs from the all-star events of other leagues because it traditionally takes place toward the end of the season rather than midway through it. The first Pro Bowl was held in early 1951, several weeks after the league’s championship game.

Between 1970 and 2009, it was held during the first weekend following the Super Bowl. For the 2010 edition, it was moved to the weekend before the Big Game. Players from the two franchises participating in the Super Bowl do not take part.

How Are Participating Players Selected?

A consensus vote determines each Pro Bowl roster, with coaches, fans, and players all having a say in the selection process. The NFL is the only major professional sports league in the US that considers fan votes during the selection process. Each traditional roster comprises 18 defensive players, 21 offensive players, and five specialists, for a total of 44 players per side.

1. Who Is Eligible for Consideration?

   Players are eligible for consideration if they were among the initial selections for a roster or were invited to the all-star event as replacements. Members of the two teams competing in the Super Bowl do not participate in the Pro Bowl and are replaced. Replacements who decline to participate are not deemed Pro Bowlers.

2. Monetary Prizes

   All participating players are eligible for monetary prizes, but those on the losing team receive smaller checks. The losing side at the 2022 Pro Bowl received $40,000 per player, while each member of the winning team received $80,000.

3. MVP Title

   Additionally, the top performers on the defensive and offensive sides are honored with Most Valuable Player awards. At the 2022 Pro Bowl, the offensive award went to Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders earned defensive MVP honors.

Pro Bowl Rules

As previously explained, only the best players make it to the Pro Bowl, and it is in everyone’s interest to avoid serious injuries to these top performers. Various rule adjustments have been introduced to reduce this risk. The following changes applied to the 2022 Pro Bowl.

1. Coin Toss

   The referee flips a coin at the beginning of the game, with each side choosing heads or tails in advance. The team that wins the coin toss may select one of two privileges, while the losing team receives the other. The privileges are “spot” and “choose”.

   • The team with the “spot” privilege chooses the ball’s field position for the first play of the first quarter.
   • The team with the “choose” privilege decides whether to start the game on defense or offense. This privilege is always exercised after the “spot” option. The team that lost the initial coin toss chooses between the two privileges at the beginning of the second half.

2. Rules for the Scoring Team after Field Goals

   The team that scores a field goal or successfully converts a try attempt has two options. It can either give the ball to the opposing team at that team’s 25-yard line or take possession at its own 25-yard line. The scoring team retains possession if it succeeds in making a first down; otherwise, the opposing team assumes possession.

3. Clock Rules

   The standard 40/25 rule was replaced by a 35/25-second clock during the 2022 all-star event. The clock started on the referee’s signal following an incomplete pass, unlike under the standard timing rules. However, this special rule did not apply during the final two minutes of the first half or the final five minutes of the second half.

4. Other Pro Bowl-Specific Rules

   In addition to the changes listed above, intentional grounding was not penalized. Rushing on passing plays was allowed only for tackles and defensive ends. Blindside blocking and blocking below the waist were strictly prohibited. The defensive team was also barred from using blitzes.

3. Pro Bowl Team Totals

   Betting on team totals is similar to wagering on over/under markets, with one small difference. Here, you predict how many points one of the two teams will score. There is no need to guess the exact number of points. You are simply betting on whether the team’s score will be over or under the specified total.

   AFC team total: over 21.5 (-115), under 21.5 (-115)
   NFC team total: over 17.5 (-115), under 17.5 (-115)

   One point to remember is that team totals are derived from the overall total and the spread. Whenever the spread and total lines move, the odds for the team total market may also move to reflect the changes.
