Barcelona players and staff celebrate winning 28th Spanish title

    Key Takeaways:

  • Barcelona secured their 28th La Liga title with a 2-0 victory over Espanyol
  • Lamine Yamal scored one goal, provided an assist, and drew a red card for the hosts
  • Hansi Flick won La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup in his debut season

Barcelona are the new champions of Spain! The Catalan giants secured their 28th La Liga title with a 2-0 away victory over city rivals Espanyol in the Catalan derby from the 36th round of La Liga. The crucial opener came from Lamine Yamal, who scored a beautiful goal in the 53rd minute and later provided an assist for Fermin Lopez’s late strike (90+5′). Yamal’s influence didn’t end there — he also drew a red card for Espanyol defender Leandro Cabrera in the 80th minute.

The first half was far from impressive for Hansi Flick’s side, with Espanyol missing several chances. But in the second half, Barcelona took control, securing the victory and, with it, the title. They are now unreachable at the top, leading by seven points over reigning champions Real Madrid with two rounds remaining. This victory extended Barcelona’s phenomenal run in La Liga to six consecutive wins, with an impressive record of 15 wins and just one draw in their last 16 league matches.

The title comes in Hansi Flick’s debut season, where he also won the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. In the Champions League, Barcelona reached the semifinals, where they were eliminated in a dramatic two-legged encounter against Inter. Curiously, this triumph has a sense of déjà vu — two years ago, in 2023, Barcelona also secured the title on Espanyol’s pitch.

After the final whistle, tensions flared as Espanyol players reacted angrily to Barcelona’s celebrations. To cool the situation, sprinklers were turned on, but no serious incidents occurred.

Barcelona’s campaign was marked by four straight victories over their arch-rivals Real Madrid across all competitions. The team delivered exceptional performances, with standout contributions from Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Pedri. Despite facing numerous injuries and dealing with player registration issues, Hansi Flick’s squad proved to be the best in Spain, rightfully claiming the title.
