Arsenal have finalized the signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. According to Sky Sports, the English club have activated the £51 million release clause in the European champion’s contract.

BBC confirms that all documents have already been signed and only the player’s medical remains, which is expected to happen very soon. The two clubs have also fully agreed on the payment structure of the release clause.

Zubimendi, who helped Spain to the European title last summer, was close to joining Liverpool but eventually decided to stay at Real Sociedad for one more season. Arsenal have been working on the deal for months to beat their rivals, as at one point both Real Madrid and Barcelona were reportedly interested in the midfielder.
