The CONCACAF Gold Cup features 16 teams and determines the football champion of the North America, Central America and Caribbean region. Fifteen of the participants are from within the region, while one invited guest — Saudi Arabia — completes the field. The teams are divided into four groups of four, with the top two from each advancing to the knockout phase.
At the stadium in San Jose, California, Canada confirmed their status as one of the tournament favourites, despite being without some of their top European-based players. In the 27th minute, 21-year-old Nico Sigur, played a one-two with Jonathan David, broke into the box, and scored with a composed right-footed finish. Just before the interval, Oluwaseyi made it 2-0 after Richie Laryea delivered a pass across the six-yard box, allowing him to chip the ball over the advancing Honduras goalkeeper Edrick Menjivar.
The start of the second half brought another pair of goals from Buchanan, and in the final quarter-hour, Promise David and Nathan Saliba wrapped up the 6-0 score.
