Key Takeaways:
Crystal Palace have turned down an offer from Atalanta for fan favourite Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Italian side are in the market for a new centre-forward after selling Mateo Retegui to Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah for €65 million earlier this summer, and had identified the French striker as their main target. However, the proposed €34.7 million (£30 million) bid was rejected, BBC Sport reports.

Mateta has become a key figure at Selhurst Park, averaging 15 Premier League goals across the last two seasons and scoring a total of 41 goals in 104 appearances in all competitions over that span. His contract was extended in December via an activation clause, tying him to the club until the summer of 2027. Crystal Palace reportedly have no intention of letting the 28-year-old leave easily.
Despite their setback, Atalanta continue to search for a replacement for Retegui. The club also experienced a managerial change earlier in the summer and currently have Gianluca Scamacca on their books, though the Italian striker missed most of the 2024–25 campaign due to two separate injuries.
If negotiations with Crystal Palace do not yield a breakthrough, Atalanta are said to be considering Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz, Lecce’s Nikola Krstovic, and Genk’s Tolu Arokodare as alternative options for the striker position.
