The club is also preparing to offer a significantly improved deal to its midfield star Rodri, in an attempt to neutralise the growing interest from Real Madrid. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the new contract will run until the summer of 2029, and the Spaniard will become the second-highest-paid player at the club after Erling Haaland.
The move is part of the club’s long-term strategy to retain one of Pep Guardiola’s most important players. The board is determined to avoid a scenario in which Rodri enters the final two years of his current contract without clarity about his future, especially given the serious interest from the Spanish giants.
In September of last year, Rodri suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in a match against Arsenal and missed most of the 2024/2025 season. He returned to action in the penultimate Premier League round against Bournemouth and later travelled with the squad to the USA for the FIFA Club World Cup.
Despite not having a great 2024/25 campaign, Rodri’s partner in City’s midfield – Phil Foden – is also expected to receive a bumper offer.
