Wrexham Set Sights on Manchester City’s Callum Doyle as Summer Expenditure Surges to £35m

Key Takeaways:

  • Wrexham have launched an £8m bid for Manchester City defender Callum Doyle, according to The Athletic.
  • The club’s summer spending now totals approximately £35m, including a £7.5m record signing of Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich.
  • Wrexham suffered defeats in their first two Championship fixtures and will be seeking their first win this weekend against Sheffield Wednesday.

Transfer Activity Intensifies at the Racecourse Ground

Wrexham are reportedly close to finalising a significant transfer for Manchester City’s Callum Doyle, in a move that would further accelerate the club’s already active summer window. Having secured promotion to the Championship, Wrexham have made a considerable impact in the market, with transfer spending having reached around £20m so far, highlighted by a record-breaking £7.5m deal for Ipswich Town forward Nathan Broadhead.

The Athletic has indicated that Wrexham are now poised to sign Doyle, a 21-year-old defender, for an £8m fee. Competition for his signature has come from Rangers and Sheffield United, but it appears Wrexham are leading the chase for the Manchester City prospect.

Callum Doyle’s Career Trajectory

Doyle has spent his entire development with Manchester City, having risen through their youth ranks. Despite being highly rated, he has featured just twice for City’s first team. Notably, his loan spells have proven more fruitful. In 2022, Doyle played a pivotal role in Sunderland’s promotion, followed by an appearance in the Championship play-off final the following season with Coventry. He then moved on loan to Leicester City, contributing to their Championship title win, and spent last season at Norwich City.

Quoted by the Pink Un earlier this summer, Doyle expressed his readiness for a permanent transfer: “I think (a permanent move) is the next aim for me,” Doyle told the Pink Un. “It’s my fourth loan now, and I’ve been all over the country.

“I’ve got nothing to say bad about this club. I love it. I’ve loved playing here and at Carrow Road. The fans are great, so you never know (about a return). It just depends on what happens in the summer, to be honest.”

Manager’s Perspective and Upcoming Fixtures

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has said he wishes to strengthen his squad further before the transfer deadline. He stated: “We’re looking across the board. We probably do need a couple more players, we’re looking at that.

“It’s ongoing, it’s obviously busy for all managers and clubs at the moment when you’re preparing for games and looking to improve the squad. The lads we’ve brought in at the moment are really good and I’m pleased with the way they’ve settled in.”

The club have endured a difficult start to life in the Championship, suffering late defeat to Southampton before losing to Norwich City. Their search for a first league win continues as they face Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.
