International Eligibility in Focus
Jamaica national team manager Steve McClaren has voiced his disappointment regarding Mason Greenwood’s decision to postpone a commitment to the side. Greenwood, who has formally received Jamaican citizenship, was widely expected to pledge his allegiance to the team.
Missed Opportunity for Upcoming Matches
McClaren had outlined plans to name the 23-year-old Olympique de Marseille striker in his squad for Jamaica’s forthcoming contests against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago. However, with Greenwood yet to make up his mind over which nation to represent, McClaren confirmed he was unable to include him in his latest team selection.

Greenwood Prioritises Club Commitments
According to McClaren, direct talks with Greenwood revealed the forward’s current desire to concentrate solely on his club responsibilities.
“He received a passport and we expected him to come to the team’s camp, but I found out that for now he will not commit to any national team. I’m a bit disappointed, but perhaps we need to be more patient,” commented Steve McClaren at a press conference, cited by Goal.com. “We will continue to maintain contact. We will keep striving to include him in the squad, because from our conversation I understood that Mason loves and respects Jamaica. He wants to focus on club football at the moment. We must show respect. We’ll see what happens in the future,” added the head coach of Jamaica.
Potential Future Inclusion
Whilst McClaren admits that Greenwood’s decision is a setback, he remains hopeful that persistence and continued communication could eventually persuade the player to join up with the Jamaican national side.
