Key Takeaways:

  • Inter owners have reportedly delayed new contract offers for Henrik Mkhitaryan, Matteo Darmian, Francesco Acerbi, and Stefan de Vrij, whose deals expire in June 2026
  • Talks over a contract renewal for Davide Frattesi have been paused, with Oaktree prioritising an assessment of his performances this season
  • Carlos Augusto, aged 26, has requested an improved contract running until 2028 after registering two assists in seven appearances this term

Inter’s Long-Term Planning Sees Senior Stars Facing Uncertainty

As Inter map out their strategy for the 2026-27 season and beyond, club owners Oaktree have reportedly decided against extending contracts for players beyond the age of 30. This approach casts doubt over the futures of Henrik Mkhitaryan, Matteo Darmian, Francesco Acerbi, and Stefan de Vrij, each of whose current deals are set to expire in June 2026. While an exception could potentially be made for Dutch defender de Vrij, now 33, due to his capacity to contribute for additional seasons at San Siro, the prevailing stance is one of caution regarding extensions for the veteran quartet.

Augusto Demands New Deal Amid Increased Involvement

Brazilian left-back Carlos Augusto, aged 26, has become the subject of positive contract discussions. Having joined from Monza, Augusto is not yet a mainstay in the starting XI but has nonetheless featured in seven matches across all competitions this season, supplying two assists. He has submitted a request for improved terms and a contract extension through to 2028, a proposal Oaktree are reportedly open to considering despite their conservative approach to the rest of the squad.

Frattesi’s Future Clouded by Contract Suspension

Negotiations over an extension for Davide Frattesi have also stalled. Although Inter’s directors informed the Italian midfielder several months ago that they were open to fresh terms, Oaktree has since paused discussions, opting to evaluate his output throughout the current campaign. This season, Frattesi has featured on four occasions without registering a goal or assist. Notably, despite Cristian Chivu’s apparent intent to increase his involvement compared to predecessor Simone Inzaghi, Frattesi has found himself with even less playing time thus far. As it stands, his contract at San Siro remains valid until June 2028.
