Juventus Secure Vital Win Over Genoa to Maintain Fifth Spot in Serie A

Bremer has just scored for Juventus against Genoa

Key Takeaways:

  • Juventus clinched a 2-0 victory at home against Genoa, marking only their third Serie A win in their last eight matches
  • Goals by Bremer and Weston McKennie within the opening 17 minutes set the tone for the hosts
  • Michele Di Gregorio saved a second-half penalty to preserve Juventus’ clean sheet

Early Dominance Gives Juventus Advantage

Juventus wasted no time asserting their authority, racing into the lead within four minutes as Khephren Thuram directed a header back into the area, Lloyd Kelly nodded it on, and Bremer turned the ball in – albeit with a substantial deflection that left Justin Bijlow stranded. Thuram nearly doubled the advantage moments later with an ambitious effort from 25 yards.

The hosts continued to press, and a swift counter-attack in the 17th minute was capped by Weston McKennie. The American played the ball wide to Francisco Conceicao, who lured defenders before returning it to McKennie, enabling him to drive a low, first-time shot into the net to make it 2-0.

Genoa Struggle to Respond Amid Juventus Pressure

Genoa managed to produce a spell of possession midway through the half, yet failed to create clear-cut chances. Kenan Yildiz tested Bijlow for Juventus, but the Dutch goalkeeper remained equal to the challenge. Juventus spurned the opportunity to put the match to bed just before the break as Yildiz set up McKennie, who fired over from two yards.

Early in the second half, Thuram chose to square a free-kick to McKennie instead of attempting a finish himself, but the midfielder could not reach the ball in time. Bijlow then presented Juventus with another opportunity through a poor clearance that landed for Jonathan David, whose attempt struck the post.

Di Gregorio Heroics and Late Drama Secure Three Points

Michele Di Gregorio, coming on at half-time for Mattia Perin, dealt confidently with Genoa’s Tommaso Baldanzi’s first shot on target. McKennie shortly afterwards produced a crucial block to thwart Aaron Caricol.

The drama heightened in the closing 20 minutes as Bremer, moments after earlier heroics, conceded a penalty to Genoa for a foul on Caricol – a decision given after VAR intervention. Caricol took the spot kick, but Di Gregorio guessed correctly to produce a decisive save and also blocked Caricol’s volley from the subsequent rebound.

The Juventus goalkeeper later preserved his clean sheet by stopping Patrizio Masini’s header, while Arkadiusz Milik came close to adding a third for the hosts with a speculative shot from just inside the Genoa half.

Juventus Extend Unbeaten Run; Genoa Miss Opportunity

The victory extends Juventus’ unbeaten run to five matches in Serie A and in the direct meetings with Genoa, who have now suffered consecutive defeats and remain just six points above the relegation zone.
